IGTV : Everything You Need To Know


IGTV On June 20th, 2018, Instagram announced a new video platform that is on the verge of a major breakthrough. IGTV is Instagram’s unique perspective on the modern standpoint of traditional TV on your mobile device. This surface is an app featuring long-form, vertical videos from your favorite Instagram users.

Until now, Instagram users only had the exposure to the use of short-form videos of 60 seconds or less. The IGTV platform allows for users with a following of less than 10K to upload videos within a 10-minute time frame and viewers with a following of 10K+, to upload videos for up to 1-hour. Over time, Instagram has mentioned wanting to alter the time to allow all content creators to have unlimited video lengths.

This long-form video capability allows creators to share more content and tell deeper and more meaningful stories to their audience. IGTV brings a new way for content creators to get closer to their fans and engage with the community.

How to get started...

The IGTV app is available and free to download for both Android and iOS users via the Google Play Store and App Store. If you already have the Instagram app, you can sign in to IGTV with the same account and easily access IGTV one of two ways.

There is an IGTV button located at the top of your Instagram, next to the DM paper airplane, or through the stand-alone app. The app contains different tabs such as, For You, Following, Continue Watching, Popular, and more.

The app auto-plays videos from the accounts that you are already following on Instagram and will instantly start streaming when you open the IGTV app or switch over on the Instagram app, just like a traditional television would. Just like Instagram, the app allows you to like, comment, and share videos through direct messaging right to your friends and followers!

The platform is built for how you actually use your phone, full screen and vertically! The vertical video makes it easy for any user to feel like they can create a quality video without the pressure of feeling as though they need to create professional videos on a camera.

This allows for a full screen and quality viewing experience. All of these different aspects of the new video platform offers an entirely new mobile video streaming experience on-the-go. Forcing the creation of vertical only videos is an innovative step for Instagram because when shooting video content, you will have to shoot for two ratios or make sure that you can vertically crop the video. This creates a compatibility issue for creators hoping to share videos on a variety of social media platforms.      

Video has increasingly become a widely used form of social media marketing and now with IGTV, it has created an entirely new way to promote businesses and services. IGTV was created to compete with YouTube, not Netflix. The goal of IGTV is to allow viewers to follow their favorite bloggers or social influencers on a more personal level. Video creators on IGTV will be able to use the platform to make money through sponsorships, similar to how popular YouTubers make their revenue.

How To Upload Your First Video...

When you're ready to share some content with your followers, go to your channel by selecting your IGTVicon on the IGTV page, as seen in the screenshot.

Once you are on your channel, click on the + icon to add a new video.

Choose a video from your camera roll... remember that vertical is the best.

Enter a title and description. Make sure to put your keywords in this sections to help reach your target audience so that they can easily find your videos!

Did you know you can add links to the videos? Well you do now! Utilize this feature people!!

Then add a cover photo! Your cover photo what is viewers will see in their lineup of videos. Make sure it's awesome enough to capture your target audience's attention.

Click post! Now you can view your video's analytics to see how well it is performing!

Can I Pay For Ads?

At the moment, IGTV does not offer advertisements. While Instagram has a user base of 1 billion, IGTV is likely to attract advertisers and it is said that monetization is to be tested in the near future. Although the platform does not have advertising capability at the moment, IGTV represents new and unique discoverability for businesses.

Longer, permanent videos allow for deep storytelling and the ability to build stronger connections with potential consumers. It also allows for a distinctive showcase of business dimensions without any type of content or format limitations. Not only does this allow a business to get closer to its current audience, but allows the business to be discovered by new people in a global community of more than 800 million users.
